Boom Box at the Rosewood London

We relish new challenges and opportunities, it allows us to raise the bar, exceed our clients expectations and most importantly, grow. Originally starting out supplying speaker hire and backline rental and over the years we have expanded to encompass event lighting hire, technical crew and most recently custom set design.

Boombox Set complete with stage, lighting and sound

After an initial site visit at the Rosewood London we received the full brief for the event which had a music meets New York theme to it. We had a quick brainstorm at HQ and came back with a bespoke boombox backdrop and DJ booth concept for the occasion. If there is one cultural icon that sums up the explosion of music on the streets it has to be the boombox!

Final concept visual of the boombox set design

With little over a month to fully design and construct the boombox we got straight to it and worked on various possibilities that would allow for quick assembly on-site but maintain the attention to detail that bespoke set design events require. Equally the sections that made up the boombox needed to be lightweight for easy to handling and transportion.

Assembly of the boombox to postion lighitng bars and fixing points

The boom box was made from WBP ply timber sheets braced with 75mm x 50mm timber framework. The face panels had speaker and fixing details routed into the ply. A test assembly took place at our warehouse where we drilled the framework ready for 150mm bolts that would ensure rapid install and de-rig without the need for any power tools. The last week was spent on paint preparation, primer coats, sanding and metallic top coat finishes.

The event took place in the Grand Ballroom at The Rosewood London, an ultra-luxury hotel in Holborn. A flamboyant Edwardian mansion designed by architect H. Percy Monckton, 252 High Holborn has expanded in four stages over 50 years. Its subsequent transformation of this historic building from Imperial-era offices into a London luxury hotel was carried out under the guidance of English Heritage. Rosewood London event spaces offer an exquisite heritage destination for celebrations, social occasions, weddings, conferences, and corporate hospitality.

DJ point of view with Pioneer CDJ2000 NXS, DJM900 NXS and Flare Audio V12 DJ reference monitors

Along with the custom boombox set design we provided sound systems, DJ equipment, event lighting, LED starlit dance floor and staging as well as technical crew to install and operate. There is an odd satisfaction with early starts, making things happen before most of London is awake and knowing what needs to be achieved in the alloted time. Arrival at the Rosewood London for a 7am load in gave us ample time to complete the install and program lights. Once the boombox was up we enjoyed a spot of lunch and then continued with rigging lights and sound.

Avolites Quartz lighting console making light work for the lightshow

Having recently trained with Avolites we were looking forward to using was an Avolites Quartz lighting console so we took one out for a spin. A compact, flexible and highly capable console the Quartz was a joy to use and made programming a lightshow a rewarding experience. We will be making use of this little wonder a lot more.

Fixtures rigged onto the boombox included Chavuet Intimidator LED Spot moving head lights, Chauvet Colorband Pix-M moving LED pixel battens, Chauvet Slimbank UV lights, Chauvet Strike LED strobe lights and two FX Shot confetti cannons. On the front corners of the stage we used Chauvet RH1 moving heads, more Slimbank LED UV lights where used to wash the dinner tables and a total of seventy uplighters were washing walls and features in the Grand Ballroom and foyer

The boombox pumping out the classics

With a shiny new boombox as the main attraction it was ideal for our aluminium Flare Audio X3A speakers to join the set with Q18 subwoofers as front of house sound. The DJ setup featured Pioneer CDJ2000NXS with DJM900NXS mixer and V12 tops for DJ reference monitors. All loudspeakers were powered by Flare 204 Amps.

Entertainment was provided by ALR Music; DJ Charles was joined by a sax player for some highly energetic and enjoyable dance music. Dancers and an MC also in attendance had the guests up on their feet in no time with everyone very much in the mood for a good night of dancing.

Rave reviews and antics from the client and guests for the Boombox

The event concluded at midnight and so began de-rig. Thanks to some much needed coffee and sugar boost in the form of Krispy Kremes we had all vans loaded by 6am and ready for the journey back to the warehouse. All equipment returned safe and sound by 7am and we tapped out 8am, exhausted but extremely plesased that we had surpassed expectations of a very happy client.

A huge thank you to our team for the sterling effort and top class delivery. As always it was a solid team, professional from start to finish and we had a good time doing what we do best.
